Every Now & Then
I’m a full time art teacher.
And a full time artist.
Sometimes those roles split my time.
Sometimes they compete.
But most of the time they just overlap.
When my students are working, I work too.
At first it bothered me to let them see me running my art business.
Painting. Editing copy. Applying for shows.
But now they expect it.
They encourage me and compliment me.
Sometimes they visit my shows.
And I think it helps them trust my teaching more.
Which is useful because high schoolers are a tough crowd.
Spring is a time for balancing two art show seasons, theirs and mine.
Painting when I can between lectures, demos, and tending the studio.
As long as I don’t mind a few hundred interruptions.
And a fire drill every now and then.
