On the drive north, I was in the middle of an autoimmune flare and remember almost none of it beyond how sick I felt.

Then we reached Portsmouth, with seagulls overhead, old buildings by the water, and hydrangeas spilling over every fence.

They were blue, pink, cream, and purple, almost too full to be real.

As the hours passed, I began to feel better, and the trip opened up from there.

Now hydrangeas remind me that even when my body feels confined, my eyes are still free to enjoy something beautiful.
